What is the earliest timeframe in which to study records, including manuscripts, for personal names?
Ateb
Records for Welsh personal names begin with early inscriptions on pottery in Gaul, and on stone in the British Isles. You may wish to consult D. Ellis Evans, "Gaulish Personal Names" (Oxford, 1967) and V. E. Nash-Williams, "The Early Christian Monuments of Wales" (Cardiff, 1950). A good number of personal names also appear in the twelfth-century Book of Llandaff, which is available online on the Digital Mirror pages of the Library's website (http://www.llgc.org.uk/?id=1667). The charters in this manuscript, which include personal names, have been discussed by Wendy Davies, in "The Llandaff Charters" (Aberystwyth, 1979). |
